Organizations of the world:
The
Royal Naval Fleet of Agenine
The majority of the Kingdom's military lies
in its Navy. Agenine's massive military spending in a time of
peace has led to tensions with other nations; for now, the peace
is stable, but the Kingdom refuses to curb its spending. The
Fleet is unequaled in size and power; fortunately for pirates,
the majority of Naval officers don't care to get their hands
dirty dealing with "common criminals".
The Trade
Federation
A huge international trader's guild, with members from every
civilized country except Escthia. It was created with the intention
of protecting the merchants and traders of the world, but the
Federation gradually shifted toward greatly favoring its wealthier
members. Although it possesses massive political influence, the
governments of the world are largely unable or unwilling to deal
with the innumerable pirates on the seas; this led to the Federation's
decision to create its own private army of mercenaries. Overall,
the organization is disliked by both pirates and political groups;
ironic, considering that both depend on the wealth of the merchants.
The Knights
of Poseidon
The Knights of Poseidon is the title of the Trade Federation's
loosely organized mercenary army. Created in response to the major
governments' indifference to the Federation's trouble with pirates,
the duty of the Knights is limited almost exclusively to pirate
hunting and protecting cargo ships. Despite the group's noble-sounding
title, the majority of the Knights are little more than a pack
of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, many of whom are no better than
the pirates they hunt. It is not uncommon for a member to completely
disregard orders or to fight with other members over a target.
Pirates consider them their worst enemies, and a battle between
a powerful pirate and Knight can make headlines around the world.
The Archpirates
Not an organization in any sense of the word, the Archpirates
are the most wanted pirate captains in the world -- ie, those
with the highest bounty on their heads as designated by the Trade
Federation. Archpirates are labeled as such for their extraordinary
power and numerous notable acts of piracy. There are few pirate
hunters willing or able to go after such targets, but fortunately
their ranks are usually kept thin by in-fighting.
Other Stuff
Bounties
A bounty is the value designated (by the Trade Federation) as
the reward for bringing in a specific pirate, usually dead or
alive. Typically, the pirate--captured or killed--is brought to
a Federation office and identified, and the person who brought
them in is paid. The payment is only 75% if they are brought in
dead, with the exception of the Archpirates, who are nearly impossible
to subdue. Those who bring in a pirate for the bounty but are
not members of the Knights of Poseidon recieve 10% less than the
listed price. After the hunter has departed, the Federation will
cooperate with the local government to punish or dispose of the
pirate (depending on whether they are dead or alive). A pirate
with a bounty of 150,000,000 or higher is classified as an Archpirate.
The first bounty a pirate recieves is usually around 10,000, but
it varies depending on their power and acts of piracy.
Currency
Dubloon: The most prevalent form of currency in the world is
the Dubloon. These gold coins are minted by the Trade Federation
in cooperation with most of the world's nations. Even in countries
that have their own standardized currency, the Dubloon is widely
accepted.
Xien: A more valuable gold coin used in Escthia. The exchange
rate is approximately D2.5 : X1.0. The coins have a unique oval
shape.
